Minerva pupils learn to mind their moolah

ALEXANDRA - Minerva Secondary School pupils are taught financial literacy.

Pupils from Minerva Secondary School in Alexandra joined their counterparts from around the country to watch the screening of Smartbucks, Mind Your Moolah, a financial literacy film.

Smartbucks, Mind Your Moolah is designed to teach high school pupils the basics of managing money, while entertaining them at the same time. The film is produced by the Monarchy Group and organised by Stanlib, one of the top investment companies in South Africa.

This is Stanlib’s third financial literacy film and it features well-known South African actors and tackles some of the biggest challenges facing the youth. It includes issues such as over-indebtedness and wasteful spending. The film encompasses real-life scenarios in a game show setting while the financial education aspects are reinforced by a qualified financial trainer.

The 60-minute movie showed at selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas countrywide from 14 May to 11 June. This year, it was expected to reach more than 12 000 pupils from the most disadvantaged schools selected by the Department of Basic Education.

To ensure the film’s lessons last a lifetime, pupils were also given interactive booklets which would reinforce the financial lessons learnt in the film.
