Council provides street services

ALEXANDRA - Council takes its services to the people.

To wrap up Youth Month and to mark the memorable but fateful 16 June 1976 events which helped usher in the country’s democracy, the Joburg City Council and its partners took their services to the people.

In Alex, the city’s different departments, partner non-profit organisations and statutory agencies, engaged the community in a carnival street-type event which saw the council and its partners providing a variety of services and advice ranging from water, electricity and housing queries, to social services and legal advice, health monitoring and the distribution of condoms and information on HIV/Aids.

Willie Lekoloane of the City’s Region E said the event was in its eighth year. “This year, we honour Youth Month through one day of joint dedicated services, [with] all departments leaving their offices to engage with the residents in their backyard,” he said.

Lekoloane added that the services included State entities providing advice on business and economic-related issues for those wanting to start their own enterprises. He said that, in general, the public appreciated the direct and close engagement which the service providers continued to give on other days from their respective offices.

However, local resident, Emmah Sekgola said, “If only they could be this helpful daily, our lives would be different.”
