Two alleged serial rapists and robbers from Alex had their cases transferred by Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to the Joburg High Court in Palm Ridge for a hearing early next year.

The suspects are facing a combined 66 charges for crimes committed either together or individually between 2007 and last year. One suspect was arrested on 8 June and the other on the 26 July last year after an intensive investigation.

The men, Josias Mkansi (48) of 19th Avenue, and Robin Mabitsela (37) of 20th Avenue, are facing charges of multiple rapes and robberies, robbery with aggravating circumstances and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm committed on victims including 13- to 17-year-old girls.

The accused are also said to have, in some instances, compelled the victims’ male companions to have sex with the girls at gunpoint while threatening to assault both victims if they resisted.

In some cases, both accused allegedly raped the victims while restraining their companions at gunpoint. It is claimed that sometimes the victims were forced to massage or play with the suspects’ genitals or vice versa before being raped.

Afterwards, the victims were robbed of their belongings. The crimes were allegedly committed in the dark with the victims waylaid and forced into secluded spots including a cemetery and local parks.
