Three men nabbed for vehicle thefts

ALEXANDRA – Three men await trial for suspected vehicle theft.

Three men were remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for alleged motor vehicle thefts.

They will be back in court when investigations are concluded.

They were arrested in Far Eastbank, early in the morning on 25 April this year, in a joint operation by the police and officials of a vehicle tracking company who found them in possession of an Isuzu bakkie reported stolen in Finetown. The theft was said to be the second. In the first, the vehicle was recovered and the suspects arrested – their court cases are pending elsewhere.

In the second, the accused stole the vehicle fitted with a tracker system on the night of 24 April from the owner’s home while he was asleep. He was alerted to the theft by the tracking company when the vehicle was observed being driven out of its zone and towards Alexandra.

The company advised the owner to report the theft to the police while they pursued and found the vehicle parked along an Eastbank Street and next to a Mazda 323 with four men next to the vehicles. The team called for police backup and the suspects were arrested after failing to prove ownership for both vehicles.

The suspects were also searched and a set of Allen keys, which had been filed and suspected to have been used in the theft of the bakkie, were found on one of them.

Both vehicles were taken to the police pound where the bakkie owner was referred to collect it. The owner of the Mazda was being sought.
