Pikitup MD dismissed
JOBURG – Pikitup board dismisses managing director Amanda Nair with immediate effect, citing that trust has been broken down irreversibly.
The controversial managing director of the embattled Pikitup, Amanda Nair has been dismissed with immediate effect.
Nair was released of her duties by the Pikitup board and according to Pikitup, this was done in the best interest of the company, a wholly owned entity of the City of Johannesburg, its shareholders, employees and the residents of the city.
The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) accused Nair of corruption and has been calling for her dismissal. Independent auditors were appointed to investigate the allegations and the report identified weaknesses in internal policies and controls.

It also identified some wrongdoings in both human resources and financial management. “It is the view of the board that the relationship of trust with Ms Nair has broken down irreversibly,” read a statement issued by Pikitup.
According to Pikitup, in addition to the facts and evidence related to procurement and disclosure, the forensic investigation and the misconduct enquiry, correspondence with Nair had become increasingly vexatious, politicised and hostile to the former and current leadership of the board and the City.
“In a similar vein it is clear that Ms Nair would have considerable difficulty in creating a relationship of trust with organised labour and providing the leadership necessary to create harmonious workplace relations, a reasonable expectation of an MD in any company,” continued the Pikitup statement.
Pikitup has highlighted that it will settle the remainder of Nair’s contract.
However, she will be not walking away scot-free. The board said it had taken action against Nair for the violation of her duties as an accounting officer in terms of the Municipal Finance Management Act.
“We have accordingly issued a letter of demand to Ms Nair to recover acting allowances and remuneration in excess of upper limits paid to employees without due authorisation. Legal action in the civil courts will be instituted against Ms Nair in terms of section 176 (2) of the Municipal Finance Management Act to recover the losses suffered by Pikitup, if need be,” concluded the statement.
