Pomp, colour, spirit in Alex on Heritage Day

ALEXANDRA – Alex's colorful, free spirit on Heritage Day.

Heritage Day celebrations in Alexandra were filled with pomp and ceremony.

Regardless of age, many residents walked the streets proudly in their traditional regalia seemingly to make a statement about their identity. Others gathered at various venues to honour the day through traditional activities and motivational talks beseeching them to affirm their self-pride.

At Thusong Youth Centre, non-profit organisation Bontle Bo Afrika brought together cultural activists and residents who shared experiences and knowledge of African culture with children and the youth. They also displayed their traditional wares and proudly wore their splendid and colourful African attire which blended well with their beautiful ebony bodies.

At the Alexandra Plaza, musician Isaac Makoa enthralled the amazed crowd with a display of dance gymnastics to a repertoire of his songs.

Not to be outdone, children walked the streets in their attire with some boldly declaring that it was important to affirm and celebrate their cultural identity, albeit once a year. This, raising a question on whether this was a sustainable way to preserve and promote one’s culture.

At Club Neh in Marlboro, many gathered in colourful attire to celebrate Alex FM’s 21st birthday celebration. Station manager Takalani Nemangowe said the event was most befitting as it coincided with an important day in the country. “We celebrate a great milestone for the station which is one of the few oldest community stations still standing in the country,” he said.
