Sewage mess on 9th Avenue ends

ALEXANDRA - Residents relived after weeks of sewage stench.

Alex residents of 9th Avenue, who were tormented from 6 September by a stench from a mini sewage dam on the road, have finally found relief.

This after underground sewerage pipes, which spewed the raw sewage, were unblocked on 22 September by the Joburg Water Department’s maintenance team, allowing the residents to access their homes, and to assess the damage to their property.

The problem was reported in Major Stink Week ending 16 September in which residents said the flooding was a regular occurrence, especially in the rainy season when flood water swept non-degradable waste into the drainage system, blocking it. In this instance, the residents and council workers said the pipes were blocked with bricks and other rubble resulting in the raw sewage spewing out of two manholes in the road.

A resident, Sipho Ndlovu and others, said the council workers also found something which looked like a decomposing human foetus in the waste, which was taken away by the police. Police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said the discovery is under investigation.

Some of the workers urged the residents not to throw items they knew would again block the pipes to avoid inconveniencing themselves in the future.
