What is best for exam success?
JOBURG – Making healthy choices to boost exam perfomances.
There is nothing quite like the stress of exam time.
With worries mounting and revision piling up, healthy living can often be the last thing on your mind.
The best way to think smarter is to eat smarter. Making the time for healthy pre-exam foods can give children an added edge for results success.
According to Better Days dietician, Cheryl Meyer, making sure your child has a healthy breakfast and that they are hydrated and get enough sleep, can help boost their concentration levels and alertness. “Breakfast is associated with improved memory and helps children to retain what they learn in the classroom. It is key to maximising exam performance.”
Here are Meyer’s top tips to fuel exams the right way:
Make time for breakfast
Nutrients from a healthy breakfast will improve concentration which may also translate into better understanding of exam questions and overall results.
Choose your food wisely
Breakfast that contains high-fibre carbohydrates and protein, such as cereal and milk, can ensure sustained energy for their testing day ahead.
Stay hydrated
Avoid a sugary drink binge and be wary of caffeine as that can increase nervousness. Water is still the best choice for hydration.
Snack where possible
Fruit and vegetables rank high among the best foods for the brain. Give your children fresh produce in a range of colours every day to give them the different nutrients they need for good health.
Sleep well
On the night before the exam, it is important to stop studying early in evening and prepare for the morning.
