Fiery end to relationship
ALEXANDRA - Court witnesses man reject convicted arsonist lover.
The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court was witness to a married man pronounce the end of his relationship with a girlfriend who is charged with arson after she burnt down his shack.
The accused, Nancy Makhubela, who is in her mid-twenties, was sentenced to five years, wholly suspended for arson after she burnt down the victim’s shack and his property at Setswetla Informal Settlement at midday on 24 October, this year. The victim was at work at the time of the incident.
The victim told Makhubela in court that he no longer loved her, to which the magistrate added as advice, that she should move on with her life.
The victim also asked that her relatives assist in compensating him with R3 500 to rebuild his shack as she was unemployed.
The two had been living together, however, the relationship soured and the accused burnt the shack down when the man told her to move out.
After setting the shack alight, Makhubela attempted to escape by taxi, but the public – who put the fire out before it spread to other shacks – stopped her and beat her, before police arrived and arrested her.
