‘Detective’ cons woman out of R2 500

ALEXANDRA – Woman swindled by alleged detective in boyfriend's case.

An Alex woman was allegedly conned of R2 500 by a suspect claiming to be a police detective investigating the case of her boyfriend who was due in court.

Spokesperson for Alex Police Station, Captain Allie Kodisang, said the complainant was allegedly called by the suspect claiming to be Detective Sergeant Molefe Mogale on 25 October.

The suspect said that he was investigating the unspecified case involving the complainant’s boyfriend, Shadrack.

According to the victim, the suspect allegedly told her to deposit R5 000 into an account at Pep Stores for the boyfriend to use when appearing in court. The complainant did as asked, however, only deposited R2 500 at the store’s branch at Pan Africa Mall.

After receipt of the money, the suspect allegedly told the complainant by cellphone to meet him at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, but the suspect did not arrive as agreed.

When she tried to contact the suspect, his cellphone was on voicemail and she has not been able to reach him since.

Police are investigating the matter.
