Eastbank introspects on drop in matric results
ALEXANDRA - Drop in 2016 matric results gets school to explore all options for improvement in 2017.
Eastbank Secondary School intends applying more improvement strategies to enhance their chances of improving on their 2017 matric results.
This was said by the school’s deputy principal, Josephine Mokgoatlheng, when discussing the school’s pass rate of 75.4 per cent, a drop of 1.5 per cent from last year’s 76.5. Out of a total of 167 matrics who wrote the examinations, 126 passed with only 55 obtaining bachelor’s degree, 45 diplomas, 26 higher certificates. Eight distinctions were attained – on in Zulu, two each in Sotho and business studies and three in history.

Decrying the drop, Mokgoatlheng said there was room for improvement, with the key being to complete the syllabus by the end of June to enable more revision time; and the use of past examination papers. She said they will also emphasise class attendance, institute weekend tutorials, and participate in the Secondary Schools’ Improvement Programme (SSIP), which helps teachers learn different improvement strategies and styles from others, motivate the pupils through exchanges and gain different study methods.
She added that they will enlist the support of other professionals to motivate the pupils throughout the year and expose them to potential careers options.

Mokgoatlheng also urged parents to improve their level of involvement in their children’s education so they can better understand where their children need help, and to engage more with teachers about their concerns. This, she said, included ensuring they registered the children early and in time to avoid them losing out on schooling from the first day of the term.
