School analyses matric results

ALEX - Alex Secondary School tackles low matric pass rate

Alex Secondary School will diagnose its academic challenges and effect remedial strategies as it aspires for the ultimate 100 matric per cent pass rate.

This was said by the principal Zoleka Lebelo when recounting last year’s results in which they obtained second position. They achieved a 91.98 per cent pass rate compared to Kwabhekilanga Secondary’s 92.86 per cent. The two recorded the only improvements of 1.25 and 2.25 per cent respectively, compared with last year’s five secondary schools.

Lebelo attributed the improvement to stakeholders’ involvement who, she said, will participate in diagnosing the challenges and in implementing remedial strategies. “For the future, we aim to build on the improvement in performance, discipline, class attendance and parental support,” Lebelo said.

She added that all 10 of their top performers out of 166 matriculants got distinctions, 55 of them obtained bachelors’ entry, 60 diplomas, 34 senior certificates, 13 failed and four didn’t write the exams.

The improvement also followed a traumatic experience when a security guard at the school was shot and severely injured by robbers who stole numerous tablets and others items used for teaching and learning. “The guard has recovered and the items replaced,” said Lebelo.
