Emfundisweni fears for its iPads
ALEXANDRA – Break-in at school leads principal to fear for donated iPads.
Emfundisweni Primary School principal, Thembi Giyama fears for her newly donated iPads following a break-in at the school late in January.
In an interview with Alex News, Giyama said she was perturbed by the increasing incidents of break-ins at schools in the township. This school break-in comes hot on the heels of an earlier one at KwaBhekilanga Secondary School.
Thieves broke into the offices of Emfundisweni on 31 January, using a crowbar to force open the steel doors, helped themselves to some petty cash, four laptops, and public address systems that she did not want to put a price tag on.
Giyama was interviewed shortly after the donation of some 20 iPads for her Grade 3 class by Human Doings, a non-profit organisation along with its partners, Mimecast South Africa and IschoolAfrica.
The iPads are expected to go a long way in improving the literacy and numeracy levels of the school, a move which Giyama greatly appreciated for her children.
“I am afraid, though, for these iPads, following this targeting of schools in our community. I urge the community, especially those living closest to the schools, to guard the schools and its property as it is meant to benefit their children,” she said.
She commended the work of the police who arrived swiftly at the scene, long before herself. She said they have not been informed of any arrests so far, but the Gauteng Department of Education hopes to beef up security at schools.
