Report problems to me first, urges councillor
ALEXANDRA – Councillor urges residents to first report any issues they have in the ward to her.
Ward 107 councillor Ambie Maseko is urging residents of her ward who are experiencing faults or problems, to report the issues directly to her first so she can take the issue up with the relevant department.
Maseko was reacting to a recent article published in Alex News which stated that residents who were experiencing a sewerage pipe blockage, were requesting the assistance of the City of Johannesburg. In the article, residents also stated that they were fearful of confronting those who were blocking the pipe with non-flushable items.

When workers from Joburg Water attended to the blockage, they retrieved disposable nappies, old underwear, dishcloths, pot scrapers and sanitary towels from the pipe. When residents were asked why they flushed these items down the toilets they placed the blame on other parties.
“When we try and confront them not to flush such items down their toilets, they often get edgy and tell you off, hence we also just watch, but when it’s blocked we all suffer,” said one resident, Nico Thwala.
Maseko said residents in her ward are fully aware of the procedure and protocol when dealing with sewerage blockages and that they were required to first report these issues to her, as she would be their bridge with the relevant authorities or the right entity of the City.
“I always tell them at meetings how to go about reporting faults within the ward,” said Maseko, who claimed she was unaware of the blocked pipe as it had not been brought to her attention.
“But besides the issue, they are aware of the procedure and I urge them to always follow it whenever they have issues in the ward. [They must] attend meetings where we address all the issues and those relating to flushing undesirable items down the toilets,” she concluded.
