Two police officers allegedly injured in a shootout with hijackers in Yeoville and Bramley

ALEX – A manhunt is launched for suspects who wounded police officers during a shootout.

Two Metro police officers were shot and injured while chasing suspected hijackers on 28 March.

According to the spokesperson for Gauteng Provincial police, Captain Kay Makhubela, a Metro police officer was allegedly shot in Yeoville and his counterpart in Bramley by the same suspects.

One of the Metro police officers spotted a VW Golf 7 suspected to have been hijacked, and gave chase. A shootout ensued and the officer was shot in the upper body and the suspected hijackers fled the scene.

“The suspects were then spotted on the N1 and another chase ensued. The chase led to Bramley where the suspects started shooting at civilians and a shootout ensued again between the police and the suspects. One of our police members was shot, also in the upper body,” adding that two civilians also sustained bullet wounds.

The suspects then sped off towards Alexandra and, according to the police, switched vehicles and jumped into another allegedly hijacked vehicle, an Audi Q7.

According to Makhubela, the car was later found in Alexandra and two rifles and a pistol were found in the stolen vehicle.

Both the officers and the injured civilians were taken to hospital.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
