Alex Magistrates’ Court gives suspended sentence to youth found guilty of housebreaking and theft

ALEXANDRA – Youth gets suspended sentence for housebreaking and theft of recovered household items.

The Alex Magistrates’ Court sentenced a 20-year-old to seven years’ imprisonment wholly suspended for five years for housebreaking and theft.

Hebert Mokonyana of Alex, first denied but later admitted to breaking into a residence on Thoko Mngoma Street, Eastbank, on 21 February. He was convicted for stealing a DVD player, two amplifiers, sneakers and a jacket which were all recovered.

Alex police officers on patrol saw him walking suspiciously while carrying a bag and stopped him. In the bag were the stolen items.

At first, Mokonyana claimed to have picked up the items from a rubbish dump but later admitted to breaking into the house where he stole them.

Police took him to the crime scene and the homeowner who was at work was contacted. The homeowner later identified the items as his.
