Neighbours at each other’s throats over construction of veranda

ALEXANDRA - Neighbours in the infamous Ext 10 are at each other's throats over the construction of a veranda by one of them and its alleged demolition by the other.

A former uMkhonto we Sizwe veteran and Extension 10 man in the Far East Bank has approached the courts for protection from alleged ‘harassment, victimisation and intimidation’ by his neighbours.

The man said he now lives in fear of his life after the same neighbours of his came past his place allegedly brandishing guns in what he called ‘intimidating tactics’.

David Jwara, 62, said his troubles with his neighbours started in 2014 when they started using his stoep, veranda, water tap and basin but despite his numerous protests and request that they stop using his facilities, this never stopped but ‘instead intensified with vigour and arrogance’.

As a protective measure, Jwara, also a former superintendent of the South African Police, said he then decided to build a wall around the veranda; stoep, basin and water tap so they could not have access to his facilities. He claims the next thing his neighbours did, was knocked down the wall.

David Jwara, an uMkhonto we Sizwe veteran and former Superintendent of the South African Police Service, stands next to his demolished veranda wall.

Despite numerous detailed documents he has handed to the City of Johannesburg’s Housing Department and several personal visits to the offices regarding the tiff with his neighbours, Jwara claims he has received no joy from the City. Jwara also alleges that he has stopped building a ceiling on his house because of the leaking geyser of his neighbours.

“I have approached them a number of times, asking them to fix their geyser which was damaging my ceiling but all this has fallen on deaf ears. Instead, all I get are threats from the children right up to the mother and a man I believe to be the father of the household,” Jwara alleged.

In the face of all this, Jwara said he then approached the police to open a case against the neighbours for the demolition of his wall around his veranda and intimidation.

When approached by Alex News, the mother refused to comment and called a man on her cell phone who then indicated he was going to call this journalist two days down the line after taking his number down.

When they failed to call as agreed, Alex News then paid them another house call and was met by a middle-aged woman who said they [family] had no comment to make on the matter.
