Alex musician is ‘quietly’ making some noise
ALEXANDRA - Alex musician, popularly known as YKS, is making waves on the digital music platforms.
Digital platforms are a funny lot. Unless you have the technological gadgets and know-how to access this hole in the net, you will remain ignorant and uninformed of the goings-on around you.
This applied to me when I met Alex musician Sizwe Talent Buthelezi for an interview. His manager, whom I had been liaising with in setting up this appointment, introduced him to me by his stage name as the ‘popular’ YKS, which stands for ‘Young King Sizwe’.
I was then bewildered and taken aback. Popular! But I hadn’t heard about him before. Thato Molemane of Levels Entertainment then explained, “Go on digital platforms and you’ll see how popular he is.”
It then dawned on me that unless you have these gadgets and knowledge to access the internet, someone may be ‘quietly’ making waves without you knowing. YKS (20) is one such artist making some noise on the digital platforms with his music.
YKS’ popular Paper Chase title released in March and is being aired on Alex FM is only available on digital platforms such as iTunes,
Amazon, Google Play and Deezer, while his other title, Money Calling, is available online and also making its own waves.
YKS, who is currently studying sound engineering and music at the Southwest Media College in Braamfontein, is hard at work trying to piece together a music video for Paper Chase, which should be available on the same platforms as from July.
His music career was ignited by his sister, Zinhle B, and cousin, Thanda Zulu, who are both musicians. Zinhle B often took him to the studio when she was recording her songs. “I was at high school at that time and this reinforced my love, after which I never looked back,” YKS said.
A matriculant of Northview High School where he met Molemane, YKS describes his genre of music as trap soul which resonates with the youth more as its talks about their issues and the difficulties they face, without excluding the favourite subject of love.
