Car thief jailed for five years by Alex Magistrates’ Court
ALEXANDRA – Young man nabbed an hour after car theft and receives five-year jail term.
A man from Alex who was accused of motor vehicle theft from a mechanic was sentenced to five years behind bars by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.
Tshepo Everts (23) was, on 5 June, found guilty for the theft which occurred at night on 23 June last year at the intersection of Vincent Tshabalala Road and 13th Avenue.
The mechanic from an East Rand company parked an Isuzu Bakkie in front of a truck which he was fixing when he saw the vehicle driving away. He immediately alerted the company and they in turn reported the theft to the police. The company called the victim within an hour and told him of the vehicle’s recovery and that he should collect it from Alex Police Station.
Police on patrol found the car parked at a tavern with the suspect and an accomplice inside. The accomplice escaped while the accused who was on the driver’s side was arrested after he failed to prove ownership of the car.
