The Next Generation Comedy Series gives up-and-coming comedians an opportunity to perform on a professional platform
JOBURG – The Goliath Comedy Club at Melrose Arch will give novice and intermediate comedians the opportunity to showcase their skills.
Goliath & Goliath in partnership with established comedian Carvin Goldtstone and Savanna Premium Cider brings an exciting new platform to the Johannesburg South African comedy scene – the Next Comedy Generation Series.
The show will debut at the Goliath Comedy Experience on 9 June.
The show is a platform for novice and intermediate comedians who have been performing for more than one year and offers young acts a professional stage alongside a senior act to showcase their skills. “We believe this project will better prepare the next generation for a lasting career in stand-up comedy and the South African entertainment industry,” said Goldstone.
Conceptualised by Goldstone, the project was initially started in Durban and helped fast track young comedians who had previously only had the opportunity to perform in noisy bars that are converted into comedy clubs on specific nights of the week.
Goldstone said while these venues presented them with an opportunity to test their comedic abilities, the environment was not conducive to comedy. “These venues are often frequented by patrons whose main aim is to enjoy a night of drinking and socialising with friends and are suddenly presented by a novice comedian trying his hand at comedy. This can be discouraging for any comedian and may lead to doubt in themselves and their material,” said Goldstone.
The Next Generation Series will provide these comedians with a dedicated comedy space and captivated audience.
“Comedy is one of the most difficult arts to perform,” said Jason Goliath, of Goliath and Goliath. “These comedy-focused platforms give comedians the best opportunity to do well while giving audiences the best possible comedy experience.”
The line-up for the show on 9 June includes Beach, Gilli Apter, Panch Gasela, Bongani Dube, Kraai du Toit and Isabella Jane.
