Tinkler is now a Letsatsantsa

JOBURG - Eric Tinkler joins SuperSport United after a successful season with Cape Town City FC.

SuperSport United Football Club has secured the services of Eric Tinkler as head coach on a three-year deal.

Tinkler’s appointment, which takes effect with Matsatsantsa A Pitori (Bourgeois of Pretoria) on 1 July, was announced by club CEO Stanley Matthews who expressed his delight at the acquisition of one of the country’s most successful coaches.

The former Bafana Bafana captain had a long and successful playing career at Bidvest Wits and later Vitoria De Setubal in Portugal, Cagliari in Italy and then Barnsley in England.

Tinkler earned 48 national caps for Bafana Bafana between 1994 and 2002 and helped South Africa to lift the 1996 African Cup of Nations under one of the most successful coaches of Bafana, the legendary Clive ‘The Dog’ Barker.

Appointed as assistant coach at Orlando Pirates, the 46-year-old assisted the Soweto-based side to qualify for the MTN 8, Telkom Knockout, Nedbank Cup and Confederation of African Football (Caf) Champions league final.

After taking full reign at the Buccaneers as head coach, Tinkler led Pirates to the Confederations Cup and Nedbank Cup final in the 2015/16 season. It was SuperSport which beat Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final that year.

His first major silverware came in 2017 after leading Cape Town City to the Telkom Knockout trophy, and into the top three of the Absa Premiership in their maiden season.

“We are excited about Eric taking the team forward,” said Matthews. “He has earned his stripes as an international player and as a coach. He has a fantastic track record of both building young players and being fiercely competitive within the Absa Premiership.

“By qualifying for a variety of domestic and continental cup finals, he has shown his potential to be one of the great South African coaches of the future.”
