Suspended sentence given at Alex Magistrates’ Court for possession of stolen property
ALEXANDRA – Man found with stolen car gets suspended sentence.
A man was sentenced to eight years imprisonment for receiving stolen property in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on 20 June. The sentence was wholly suspended for five years.
Thabang Ngwenya (32) of Orange Farm was found at midnight on 24 April last year, with three others from Tsutsumani, sitting in an Isuzu bakkie reported stolen that same night in Orange Farm.
The vehicle owner parked it in his yard before going to bed. Later, a tracking company woke him up to alert him that the vehicle was being driven outside its radius and heading towards Alex. After the owner of the vehicle checked and found it missing, the tracking company advised him to report the stolen vehicle to the police immediately.
The tracking company’s guards found the vehicle parked on the side of the road in Tsutsumani with the accused and three others sitting inside. Behind them was another vehicle which allegedly belonged to two of the accused’s companions.
During court proceedings, the accused, who has a previous conviction, admitted sole responsibility for receiving stolen property after investigations couldn’t prove that he actually stole the vehicle which was returned to the owner.
