Alex women made punchbags
ALEXANDRA – Women abuse a worrying trend in Alex.
Alex women’s need for love, affection, care and companionship from their husbands, siblings, relatives, boyfriends, and friends seems to attract the opposite reaction.
This is revealed by cases reported at the police station on violence and abuse including rape and murders, which occur weekly. This notwithstanding the possibility of questionable intent in some of the reports.
In the week ending 18 June, police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang revealed the following reported case.
At 9.30am on 12 June, a jilted lover went to collect his clothes at his ex-girlfriend’s place on 12th Avenue. They argued and he allegedly assaulted her, took her cellphone and left her bruised.
The same day at 9.30pm, a man from Extension 7 who was allegedly drunk, found his wife in bed and, pulled away the blankets before descending on her with fists for reasons best known only to him.

At 6pm on 14 June, a woman was allegedly assaulted at her sister’s 3rd Avenue home by her boyfriend. She let him in and he allegedly hit her with the handle of a pistol while, asking her where she had slept the previous night. He called her names and told her she would never separate from him.
At 5pm on 15 June, an 8th Avenue woman was allegedly assaulted by her brother with fists and hit with a broomstick over a missing USB she denied knowledge of.
The same day at 10pm, police rescued an East Bank woman from an allegedly drunk husband who assaulted her and wanted to hit her with a hammer. He seemingly had been irked by her asking about a provident fund payout he received after losing his job.
On the same night, a Tsutsumani woman was allegedly assaulted at home by her husband after an argument. When she left to get into a taxi waiting for her outside, he allegedly hit her on the forehead with a bucket.
At 10.30am on 16 June a man allegedly assaulted a girlfriend at an 18th Avenue home after accusing her of taking his money. They argued and he beat her with his fists. She sustained facial injuries.

At 6.30 pm, another man allegedly assaulted a girlfriend at her 14th Avenue home. This was after she told him that she had been busy after he had asked her why she hadn’t come to his place. She was treated at the Alex Clinic.
At 11pm a woman’s false sense of security was shattered when her boyfriend allegedly rejected her, assaulted and stabbed her with a knife in the hand and leg at his East Bank home. She escaped and was treated at the Alex Clinic.
At 9.30am on 17 June, a woman of 13th Avenue was treated at the Alex Clinic for head injuries allegedly inflicted by a boyfriend who beat her over burnt trousers that she had been ironing.
At 9.30 pm a woman was allegedly beaten by a boyfriend on the head with a beer bottle at her 7th Avenue home, in the presence of her mother and brother.
At midnight, a man allegedly assaulted an ex-lover at his 13th Avenue home when she went to collect her clothes. Seemingly annoyed by the broken relationship, he allegedly hit her on the head as she gathered her clothes. She was treated at the Alex Clinic.
Early in the morning on 18 June, a woman of 13th Avenue escaped from a man at the same premises who tried but failed to force her into his room. He allegedly grabbed and assaulted her with his fists but she escaped and sought treatment at the Alex Clinic for body blows and injuries to her eyes.

At noon the same day, a woman was beaten and chased out of a 13th Avenue home allegedly by her drunk boyfriend. This after she seemingly infuriated him by asking why he urinated on the floor instead of in the toilet. He told her to pack her clothes and leave. As she left, he allegedly hit her with an urn, injuring her on the back of the head. She was treated at the Alex Clinic.
Kodisang said the suspects were either arrested, appeared in court or are still to appear in court and others are still under investigation.
The incidents occurred as the nation is gripped with a worrisome trend of femicide, mostly caused by relatives of the victims. Some social activists claim the reports may just be the tip of the iceberg.
