Gun thief gets three years
ALEXANDRA – Gun robber at police's home sentenced to three years jail.
A Zimbabwean man was sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Alex Magistrates’ Court on 3 August for housebreaking and the theft of two restricted guns from the Midrand home where his brother lives with a group of police officers.
Magistrate Renier Boshoff sentenced Previous Mthethwa (27) after hearing evidence about an incident which occurred at the house on 7 July while the police officers were at work. One gun was recovered days later at the accused’s flat in the Joburg CBD and the other a while later in a dustbin.
The court heard that Mthethwa broke into the house and stole a safe containing the guns and other undisclosed items. Days later, friends who were with him in the CBD alerted a Metro police officer on patrol about the gun in the accused’s flat.
The officer accompanied him to the flat where his room mate confirmed the presence of the gun and the sale of a second gun to a Somali national. Police contacted the Somalian who confirmed buying the gun from Mthethwa. He directed the police to a dustbin where the gun was found.
