Robber from brother’s employers sentenced

ALEXANDRA – Man on robbery and weapon theft gets three years in jail.

The Alex Magistrates’ Court sentenced a man to three years’ imprisonment for house robbery and theft of restricted assault weapons from a Midrand home.

The home belongs to police officers who employ the accused’s brother at their place of residence. Previous Mthethwa (27), broke into the home and stole a safe containing the weapons and other undisclosed items.

On 3 August, Magistrate Renier Boshoff sentenced Mthethwa for the theft which occurred on the morning of 7 July when the homeowners were at work.

One gun was recovered days later at the Mthethwa’s flat in the Joburg CBD, and a second in a dustbin. Friends who were with Mthethwa on the day of his arrest alerted Metro police officers to the presence of a weapon at the flat. The officers took him to the flat where his roommate confirmed the presence of one weapon, which was recovered, and the sale of the second one to another man whose contact details were provided by the accused. The man was contacted by the officers and admitted to buying the gun from Mthethwa and directed police to a dustbin where it was recovered.
