Momberg lawyers want out

JOBURG – Closing arguments in the Vicki Momberg case postponed.

Lawyers representing Vicki Momberg want to withdraw as her attorneys.

This is according to State Prosecutor, Yusuf Baba who told the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 13 September that he had received a notice of intent to withdraw from Momberg’s lawyers.

Baba also reminded the court that the accused was previously warned by the court that should she decide to fire her lawyers, she would have to represent herself going forward for the duration of the trial. Momberg has already fired two of her lawyers that have represented her in this case.

Momberg is charged with four counts of crimen injuria. She was caught on video last year uttering racist remarks to a black police officer at the scene where she had claimed to have been a smash-and-grab victim. In June, the Equality Court found that her utterances constituted hate speech and ordered her to pay R100 000 in damages to the police officer who she called the k-word.

Speaking to Randburg Sun outside court, Momberg said the only conflict of interest between her and her lawyers was their non-performance. “I will not tolerate any further lies from the lawyers,” she said. “They never consulted with me and always cancelled appointments.”

She also alleged that she never received written arguments from her lawyers that were presented in court.

The case has been postponed to 19 September for closing arguments and for the defence’s application to withdraw.
