Job seeker scammed of R4000 by fake employment agents in Alex

ALEXANDRA – Job seeker loses R4 000 to fake employment agents.

Alex police are investigating a case of alleged theft under false pretenses from a woman of Extension 10.

Spokesperson for Alex Police Station, Captain Allie Kodisang said the incident occurred at 11am on 24 October.

The job seeker was referred by a neighbour to a team of men who came to the area claiming to be employment agents for firefighters.

She contacted them on 079 573 0923, a number provided to the victim by the neighbour, and an interview was scheduled for her the same day at Florida Shopping Centre.

She was instructed to deposit a refundable R3 000 into a Capitec account for her uniform before the interview. A while later, they again called and told her to deposit a further R1 000 for boots which she did.

When she called them to confirm receipt of both payments, she was told to wait for a confirmation call in five minutes. No call came and so the victim called them numerous times until their number became unreachable.

Details: Alex police station 011 321 7621.
