One year’s jail time for hungry man
ALEXANDRA – Grocery thief sentenced after being caught red-handed.
Hunger can make for desperate behaviour.
Andries Bapela (38) from Alex, was caught stealing from a Wendywood house used as business premises. He was caught with groceries and other items.
He was sentenced in the Alex Magistrates’ Court to 12 months after he pleaded guilty to house break-in and theft.
Magistrate Renier Boshoff sentenced Bapela of 5th Avenue for the crime which occurred at night on 10 November. Security guards were alerted by an alarm to the break-in and found him in the house with some groceries including butter, bread and cooking oil, and sunglasses and bangles.
A company official called to the scene declined knowledge of him, leading to his arrest. The items were returned to her.
