Thieving employees sentenced after stealing copper wire from Morningside construction site
ALEX – Employees sentenced to seven years' imprisonment for copper theft.
Two men from Eersterust, Pretoria who were employed at a construction site in Morningside, were each sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment in the Alex Magistrates’ Court for the theft of copper wire worth R2 000.
Magistrate Renier Boshoff found Physon Titus (23) and Neeaman Jacobs (24) guilty of the theft of the copper wire which was recovered from their vehicle as they attempted to leave the site after work on 5 April.
As they left the site in their vehicle, a security guard gave them an exit book to sign which they did. She then searched the boot and found two bags containing the wire which they failed to account for.
The guard called her superiors who called the site foreman, resulting in their immediate dismissal and arrest. The wire had been cut from cables stored at the site for use in construction projects.
They were each granted bail of R3 000 at the first hearing which Jacobs skipped. He was rearrested and his bail revoked.
