Spanish LaLiga sponsored KwaMahlobo Games set to begin
JOBURG – KwaMahlobo Games to kick-off on 21 December under a new sponsor, the Spanish football brand LaLiga.
Former Bafana Bafana captain, Aaron ‘Mbazo’ Mokoena believes playing in tournaments such as the KwaMahlobo Games played a huge role in his development as a soccer player.
Mbazo, as the former Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth defender is affectionately known, is one of many professional football players who has played in the KwaMahlobo Games, which is an annual tournament that takes place at the KwaMahlobo Grounds in Soweto over the festive season.
Popularly known for bringing together football lovers from across Soweto, the tournament has grown by leaps and bounds over the past two decades especially now with the backing of the Spanish football league, LaLiga.
“The KwaMahlobo Games have shaped a number of football careers,” he said.
“The list of players I played with there that have gone on to represent the senior national team is endless and continues to grow. With the backing of LaLiga, one can only imagine how much more the tournament will do for South African football in years to come.”
This year’s edition kicks off on 21 December with Braamfisher Eagles, who won the Maimane Alfred Phiri Games in Alexandra two years back, hoping to defend their KwaMahlobo title when they take on their crosstown rivals, Braamfisher Barcelona in their opening encounter.
Sponsors of the tournament have promised plenty of prizes and entertainment for the fans who are urged to come out in their numbers.
“We enjoyed a fruitful partnership with the KwaMahlobo Games in our first year of involvement last year and want to ensure all supporters and stakeholders that we will be pulling out all the stops to ensure that the 2017/18 edition is one to be remembered,” said LaLiga Africa director, Antonio Barradas.
