How to beat new year’s stress

JOBURG – The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) has given tips on how to beat away the new year's stress.

With just four weeks into the new year, many people might already be feeling stressed and worried about how the year might transpire for them.

New responsibilities at work, home, school or debt can take its toll on many people.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) has given tips for people who might feel depressed by these changes.

“When you are nervous, angry or upset, release the pressure through exercise or physical activity. Running, walking or any form of physical activity are some of the activities you might try,” Sadag said.

Physical exercise is expected to relieve feeling uptight and help one to relax.

Talking to family, friends and people close to you is also said to be effective in relieving stress, and Sadag strongly recommended this.

“If you feel your problem is serious, you might seek help from a psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, or other mental health professionals. Knowing when to ask for help may avoid more serious problems later on.”

The organisation has also said that creating a schedule or routine that gives you enough time to rest daily help to avoid stress. People are advised not to take on too many commitments.

“If you are feeling irritable and tense from lack of sleep or if you are not eating correctly, you will have less ability to deal with stressful situations.”

Everyone is also advised to make time to have fun.

“Schedule time for both work and recreation. Doing something you enjoy can be just as important to your well-being at work; you need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun.”

Sadag offers free telephonic support, counselling and referrals to appropriate mental health care resources nationwide.
