ALEXANDRA – Taxi driver gets five-year sentence for culpable homicide.
A taxi driver is serving a five-year sentence after pleading guilty on two accounts of culpable homicide in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.
Magistrate Renier Boshoff ordered the sentences of five years each to run concurrently in a trial which was postponed several times.
Ishmael Bokaba (25) was charged with the death of a schoolchild and a man, who he ran over in a Toyota Avanza after skipping a red robot on Louis Botha Avenue in January 2016. The taxi hit a private vehicle which had the right of way. Both vehicles spun and the taxi hit the victims who were waiting at the robot killing them instantly. Passengers in the taxi going to central Joburg claimed to have warned the accused from speeding but he ignored them.
