#ICYMI: Avanza taxi drivers set to return to work
ALEX – Avanza taxi drivers return to work following strike.
Yesterday, 12 March, reports of road closures near Pan Africa Shopping Centre surfaced.
The road closures were the result of a taxi strike by local Avanza drivers. The cause of the strike has not been clarified, however, it is alleged that the local taxi drivers undertook the strike in order to protest against Alexandra Randburg, Midrand and Sandton Taxi Association (Armsta) patrollers who are accused of taking money and bribes from unlicensed and undocumented drivers.
John Mnisi, public relations officer of Armsta, said they have provisionally resolved the issue and the drivers have since gone back to work.
Mnisi said a meeting with the drivers has been scheduled to discuss the drivers’ occupation of the new taxi rank at Alex Mall. According to Mnisi, the drivers’ use of the taxi rank will help monitor and document local drivers in order to avert the recent spate of rapes, abductions and robberies associated with local Avanza drivers.
