Top 5 flood areas in and around Alex

ALEX – Flood-prone areas to avoid in Alexandra.

On 22 March, Johannesburg experienced heavy rainfall rain and this will extend well into the late hours of today, 23 March.

In a statement, the City’s Disaster Management Centre issued a warning of prolonged rainfall during this period and this is expected to cause flooding of low-lying areas.

The Disaster Management Centre said flooding occurs when water overflows its normal channels such as streams and stormwater drains. It can also occur as a result of prolonged periods of rainfall, continued heavy falls, as well as flash floods.

Residents are advised to take the following precautions:

  • Stay indoors and off the roads if possible
  • Avoid standing under big trees
  • Look out for signs of potential tree toppling
  • If trapped in a flooded vehicle, abandon the vehicle and call for help
  • Take note of and adhere to alerts given over media platforms.
