ALEXANDRA – Residents invited to budget and IDP meeting with City Council.
Residents, businesses, non-governmental organisations and all stakeholders in Region E are urged to participate in a meeting with Joburg City Council on the budget, tariffs and integrated development plans (IDP) scheduled for 6pm on 5 April at Marlboro Community Centre, 52 Zinnia Drive, Marlboro Gardens.
Speaker of Council, Vasco da Gama and Mayor Herman Mashaba and senior council officials are expected to be present.
In a statement, the speaker urges residents to participate as a way of taking charge in shaping the function of the authority in 2018/19 financial year following the recent tabling in the legislature of the City’s draft plans which now seek stakeholders’ comments.
The speaker further urged them to attend the engagement in large numbers given the importance of the IDP’s role in ensuring that their voices are heard, that the final budget reflects their needs and which will enable them to hold the executive to account.
The statement outlines the importance of IDPs as a powerful tool for residents to use to influence the direction they want the council to take and to influence services they want to be prioritised and budgeted for.
“It’s a social contract and planning process involving residents and Council in finding the best solutions to achieving good long-term development and ensure a budget and plans that reflect the wishes of residents,” the statement said in reference to residents’ roles in formalising agreed tariffs for services like electricity, water and property rates.
