Girls programme expands

ALEXANDRA – Mkhwebane hosts Realogile learnerl on special girls' day.

 

A Realogile Secondary School girl was one of a few lucky beneficiaries to attended the launch of an addition to this year’s version of the increasingly popular national initiative, Take a Girl Child to Work Day sponsored by cell phone giant Cell C.

The charity initiative in its 16th year and held every 24 May has a huge national footprint. Headgirl Gugulethu Nkosi was at the launch on 15 May in Sandton when the company announced the expansion of the initiative into a national daily movement under 365 #andmore.

In a statement, the company commended the initiative’s impact, “The expansion will increase its life-changing impact with thousands of girls already having benefited from engaging with leading figures in public, private, non-profit and others sectors. ”

The occasion saw Nkosi rubbing shoulders with among others, national Public Protector, Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane; leading businesswoman, Phuti Mahanyele; Miss South Africa, Adè van Heerden and social media expert, Emma Sadleir. According to the statement, past engagements prepared beneficiaries to be future women leaders who are expected to contribute to the economy and to be leading job creators.

Currently, 750 corporates participate in the initiative said to have also sparked debate on its role of socio-economic development and the promotion of gender equality.

According to the company’s Suzette van der Merwe, the expansion which further the debates when the number of contact days with the girls is increased. “We will continue our partnership with high schools in close proximity to our various regional offices and host the same pupils in workshops throughout the year to enhance meaningful and sustainable engagements to improve the girls’ skills, knowledge of the workplace and provide them with bursaries and internship programmes.”
