Tsutsumani residents join hands to spruce up their neighbourhood

ALEXANDRA – Tsutsumani Ext 7 residents said illegal dumping a major threat to environment and to children.

Residents of Tsutsumani Ext 7 joined forces to spruce up their neighbourhood on Saturday 26 May.

The campaign was led by Sipho Khohlakala, a community leader and member of the ward committee in ward 105. He was later joined by their ward councillor Tefor Raphadu.

Khohlakala said the initiative was sparked by the call from the City of Joburg Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba to residents across all city’s regions to participate in the A Re Sebetseng cleaning campaign that he launched in August last year.

“This cleaning project is part of the city’s project A Re Sebetseng. We as residents of Extension 7 have agreed to clean all open spaces where our children play. People illegally dump waste and that can be a danger to children who play here.

“People dump anything in these empty spaces and children are children. They see something, they want to know what it is and sometimes they eat those things, which are sometimes poisonous,” Khohlakala said.

He also said they will use the campaign to educate the community every last Saturday of the month about dangers of illegal dumping. He urged all residents of the community to join them on their next cleaning campaign.
