Unattended paraffin stove causes fire, destroying 20 shacks

MARLBORO – Fire destroys more than 20 shacks in Marlboro with the onset of one of the coldest days of this winter season so far.

An early morning fire destroyed some 20 shacks in Marlboro on the corner of 3rd Street and 2nd Avenue.

According to City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, the fire, which is believed to have been triggered by an unattended paraffin stove, started at 3am on 3 July.

Mulaudzi, whose disaster relief personnel have already been back on the scene with relief supplies for the more than 30 affected families, said it took EMS fire personnel more than an hour to extinguish the fire.

“As I speak to you, residents are busy trying to rebuild their shacks again. As the EMS, we would like to appeal to residents never to leave any heating or cooking appliances on and unattended,” Mulaudzi said.

One of the fire victims Mzwenkosi Ximba said he lost all his belongings in the fire that started while he was at work and did not know what he was going to wear.

The City of Johannesburg Disaster management will help the affected families with food and blankets and help them rebuild their shacks.
