New wheels for Tsutsumani community member
ALEXANDRA– Physically challenged community member said the new wheelchair will help her do house chores.
The Christmas season came early this year for 36-year-old physically challenged Portia Matshete of Tsutsumani Ext 9 after she received a brand new wheelchair from DA councillor Shadrack Mkhonto.
Matshete, a mother of three children received her brand-new wheels from Mkhonto who learned about her situation through his party’s activists who go door to door to find out about community challenges.
“The activists brought Portia’s issue to my attention some time ago, and I started searching for donors who could assist by donating her a wheelchair,” he said.
“The constituency secretary at Sisonke branch in Johannesburg managed to get sponsors who were more than willing to cater for this need. Today we are handing it over to her.”
Matshete was overwhelmed by the gesture and thanked the volunteers and Mkhonto for their quick response to her problem. “I am extremely happy with the gift I received today and I can’t believe that it is happening so quickly after so many attempts to get a new wheelchair from government agencies,” she said.
According to Mkhonto, his office has received four wheelchairs and they will donate them to those community members who are in real need for them.
