City to replace faulty prepaid meters
ALEXANDRA – Residents are urged to be vigilant when contractors come to replace prepaid meters.
The Joburg City Council appeals to residents, including Alex residents, to cooperate with contractors engaged to replace prepaid meters until the end of the year.
City Power said in a statement that the work, which started on 15 October, replaces bypassed, faulty and old prepaid meters with communication errors with effective and efficient meters to help consumers manage their consumption better and ensure compatibility with City Power’s migration to the smart grid.
The first phase of work will be in areas surrounding Alexandra, Randburg, Midrand and Reuven including, Athol, Bramley, Highlands, Hyde Park, Blairgowrie, Bloubosrand, Bordeaux, Bromhof, Randjiespark, Vorna Valley, Erand Gardens, Country View, Crown, Bassonia, Aspen Hills and Alan Manor.
Residents are warned not to allow contractors onto their properties without first verifying their credentials with City Power’s Security Risk Control Unit on 011 490 7911, 011 490 7553 or 011 490 7900. The contractors should also produce City Power identity cards which are colour coded per areas, with the colour blue for permanent employees. The cards should have a hologram of a firefly, the person’s photo, name and identification number as well as an expiry date.
Those who present damaged cards, with scratched or invisible photos, names and numbers should be reported immediately to security risk control on the numbers on the back of the card.
Consumers who will not be home on the scheduled dates are urged to contact City Power Metering Call Centre at 011 490 7484 to make alternative arrangements. They are also urged to contact their local councillor or regional director for more information.
