Cell C’s act of kindness for #AlexFire victims
ALEXANDRA – Cell C urges for more aid to victims of Alex's shack fire
Cell phone giant Cell C heeded pleas for aid from Alex’s arson-related inferno victims who were left with only what they had on their bodies.
The fire allegedly lit by a man who died in hospital from wounds incurred from assault by some of the victims, razed 500 shacks and all contents. In a statement, the company said close to 2 000 occupants were left devasted and displaced by the fire which occurred late afternoon on 6 December.
“The situation is dire with residents, who lost all their belongings and are desperately trying to rebuild their homes before the worst of the rain.
“There is a massive need for food and baby formula according to emergency services and humanitarian organisations working on the ground.”
Through its ongoing Acts of Kindness campaign run by the corporate social investment unit, the company donated an array of essential items including food, hygiene items, nappies and blankets to the victims. Speaking about the donation, the company’s Suzette van der Merwe said, “These people have been left with nothing. We wanted to help immediately in some small way. We also encourage our own staff and members of the public to drop off food and clothes at the Alex and Sandton fire stations for distribution to them.”
