Gunners misfire
ALEXANDRA -– Misfiring Gunners continue to drop points in the SAB League.
A misfiring Gunners will rue the wasted chances of a match they should have won after Westbury Athletico came from behind to claim a 4–3 victory.
This was in a SAB League match at the Alexandra Stadium which was characterised by missed chances for the home side in both halves.
The Buccaneers of Alex, as the Gunners are fondly known to their avid fans, could have easily scored close to a dozen goals if they had converted all their chances.
The hunger and determination to win were evident in the young Alex side as the eager striking partnership of Thokozani ‘Majaqamba’ Nyathi and Fhulufhedzani Mukatuni were caught offside several times.
The goalless first half was characterised by missed chances, mainly by the home side, as the visitors initially decided to sit back and absorb the pressure, waiting to counter-attack.
A little more than 14 minutes into the second half, the tricky Nyathi evaded his marker and latched onto a long ball and made no mistake in putting his side ahead.
But the celebration was short-lived when Westbury’s Justin Jackson turned into a super-sub and chipped the advancing Mahlatse Lebepe to level the score in just three minutes of the Gunners’ strike.
Jackson was at it again when he got his brace and put his side ahead, a goal which was immediately followed by yet another from the Westbury side, this time from the boot of Josh Isaacs.
Gunners could have pulled one back had it not been for the selfishness of Mukatuni, who wanted to also write his name on the score sheet at all costs despite being tightly marked and the angle of the shot not allowing for a strike. Mukatuni’s attempt was blocked by Westbury keeper Leeyale Smith and he could have easily passed the ball to his unmarked and advancing striking partner who was well positioned to rattle the net.
Gunners managed to pull one back through Mavhungu Matamela, making the scoreline 2–3. Substitute Terence Moyo could have quickly levelled the score for Gunners had he not fluffed a tap-in ball.
This led to the fourth goal for the Westbury side scored by Ashton Theron but before the referee could blow his whistle for full time, Matome Masasanya pulled one back for the Gunners.
