A double shot of life

BRAAMFONTEIN - If you are into the New York style coffee shop scene, then Doubleshot is your type of place.

Braamfontein can only be a coffee queen’s haven since there is a coffee shop in every nook.

If you are into the New York style coffee shop scene, then Doubleshot is your type of place. Set at the corner of Juta and Melle streets in Braamies, the traffic outside, as well as the to and fro of pedestrians outside, form the setting thanks to the shop’s big windows.

“You can take us home”

The open plan kitchen with wooden chairs and tables gives the space a home-like feel while the rusty bicycle hanging in the window adds a quirky element.

The shop is a partnership between Alex Kay, the owner of Satemwa tea and coffee estate, and Alain de Assis Rosa who is a tea blender and creator of Tea Box and Mate del sol.

The vision of the shop is based on creating a magnificent coffee and tea experience for discerning clientele.

With a team of specialist barristers and a roaster forming part of its décor, the café specialises in limited seasonal micro-lots of coffee and tea.

The business caters for both the walk-by cup of coffee and wholesale traders.

Trainee barista Stann Ngubeni has been part of the team for about four months and he is passionate about the work that he does.

Ngubeni bumped into the shop while he was walking the streets of Braamies looking for a place to perform his music. “When I got to the place that I wanted to perform at, it was closed so I walked up here and I saw the team roasting beans and I asked if I could join in because I needed something to pay my rent,” he said. “I knew nothing about coffee and I have learnt so much about the coffee and tea cultures.”

“We want people to feel welcome and the space allows people to see what we do and see the love we have for what we do,” said Ngubeni. “We want people to feel at home and relaxed.”

When asked about the name of the shop, Ngubeni explained that they only serve double espressos. “At the end of the day it is about appreciating the bean.”

The team also experiment with a variety of coffee beans and teas before they sell it to their customers. “Regulars know that we are able to roast our beans to fit their taste. As coffee lovers, we are not the same with regards to tastes so we try to accommodate different tastes.”

Clients also have the privilege of buying both coffee beans and teas from the shop. “You can take us home.”
