Local squash team coach escapes death at Thusong Youth Centre
ALEXANDRA– Hughes said he strongly believes that the incident was just one of those robbery incidents which was not meant for him.
A local squash coach Chris Hughes is recovering after escaping death on 12 February when a group of criminals stabbed and robbed him of his valuables on the premises of Thusong Youth Centre.
Hughes said after the incident this was the first time he had fallen victim of a robbery since 2015 when he started working with the local youngsters.
“I was on the premises of the youth centre to pick up a group of youngsters whom I train to play squash at Wanderers Cricket Club when a group of men appeared from nowhere, robbed and stabbed me in the leg.
“Local people have been friendly and supportive towards the project all these years. The kids like the sport but they will have to find themselves alternative transportation to and from the training sessions from now on.
“I love working with these committed and discipline youngsters but I cannot put my life in danger after what happened,”
Hughes said he did not report the matter at the local police station because he was in the state of shock. He was admitted to the Milpark Hospital where he was treated for stab wounds.
