Single mom has no place called home
ALEXANDRA - A mother was worried that soon she and her daughter would end up on the streets.
A mother who had never had a place to call home most of her life was worried that she and her daughter would end up in the streets.
Lizzy Mazibuko applied for an RDP house in 2005 and renewed it in 2007 and has since been on a waiting list. Her efforts to find out what was happening with the process of getting a house have failed because the housing department’s phones were usually not answered, and when they were, she was told that she was not the only one on the waiting list.
“I am aware that I am not the only one on the waiting list but I have been moving around so much and this is not good for my daughter,” Mazibuko said. She said that she wanted her daughter to have a home and her biggest fear was losing her daughter. “It breaks my heart every time I tell her that things are going to get better and I know they are not,” she said.
Mazibuko has lived in churches, with relatives and has also rented backrooms. “The problem with the rooms is that they are not my own and they were not a good environment for my daughter as people drink and smoke,” she said. Mazibuko wanted a place that would be a good home for her and her daughter even after she was gone.
Simon Moloko, head of the housing department in Region E, said that RDP houses were scarce and there was a huge backlog. “We are currently dealing with applications from 1996 and 1997.”
