Leeuwkop inmates have a day of soccer

JOBURG - Inmates participate in a soccer tournament sponsored by former Kaizer Chiefs player.

The inmates of Leeuwkop Prison Medium A took part in the Lucky Maselesele Life Changing Soccer Tournament finals.

The two teams in the final were Argentinos and Mamelodi Sundowns, with Sundowns winning the match 3-2. The winning team received a trophy and gold medals, the first runner-up received silver medals and the third runner-up (Alex United) received bronze medals.

Former Kaizer Chiefs player, Lucky Maselesele sponsored the tournament with the help of businessmen, Olly Khambule and Mbopha Mashigo. Maselesele is passionate about soccer and being part of the tournament is his way of showing the inmates that they were not forgotten. He said, “They made mistakes and now we have to move forward and show them that we still care about them.”

Maselesele said soccer motivated the inmates and it was important for him to show his support. “Some of these guys could have easily made it to the Premier Soccer League. But they got arrested and now we have to let them correct their mistakes,” he said.
