ADeC irked by withdrawal of Duduzane’s charges
ALEXANDRA – New Dawn cover-up for political elite's indiscretions – ADeC.
The African Democratic Change Party rubbished the government’s ‘New Dawn’ era as a cover-up for corrupt politicians to avoid accountability for their crimes.
The dawn was coined by President Matamela Ramaphosa as a departure from a past corruption-riddled era of former president Jacob Zuma.
The party said this in a statement after the Randburg Magistrates’ Court withdrew a culpable homicide charge against Duduzane, Zuma’s son.
The withdrawn charge relates to the death in 2016 in a vehicle accident of Nanki Jeanette Mashaba, who was said to have succumbed to a pre-existing condition. The second similar charge linked to the death of Phumzile Dube in the same taxi vehicle they were in and Zuma in his Porsche remains on the roll. “Frankly, it is ridiculous and unbelievable for the prosecution to suggest it was just a coincidence that she died after being hospitalised for three weeks as a result of the car accident.
“The case has been overwhelmed by political interference from the start, taking years for the case even to come to court,” the statement read.
It added that with the removal from office of Zuma, many citizens hoped that there would be accountability for the powerful and their kith and kin who committed crimes without fear of prosecution. “The announcement proved that this hope was misplaced. Mashaba, Dube and their families deserve justice.
“Now is the time that society as a whole unites as one and say no more to the rich and powerful being unaccountable.
