Get and keep your ID from Mashonisa to vote

ALEXANDRA – Credit Regulator berates Mashonisas who confiscate IDs.

The National Credit Regulator instructed credit providers to return identity documents of consumers leading up to the National General Elections.

The document will be wanted as proof for any voter wanting to exercise their rights at the ballot box.

In a statement the agency said, “All consumers whose bank cards, Sassa cards and identity documents which were taken by credit providers should get them back. Beside for election purposes, “It is illegal and also a criminal offence for credit providers to retain any consumer instruments as a way to enforce credit agreements,” Nomsa Motshegare, CEO of the agency said in the statement.

She urges consumers to report such matters to their local South African Police Service and the agency. This after six joint raids with the police between January to March this year, opened five criminal cases and recovered 411 bank and Sassa cards and 37 identity documents, passports and driver’s licences.

The agency also advised consumers to avoid credit providers who required their identity documents or cards saying it was part of the lender’s practice of reckless lending and overcharging.
