Alex community gets an opportunity to see Afcon trophy
ALEXANDRA – The tournament is set to take place from 15 June until 13 July in Egypt.
The residents of Alexandra waited patiently in long queues for the rare opportunity to take pictures with the original Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) trophy when it was in the Alexandra Township.
The organising committee of the 2019 edition of Afcon, in partnership the official payments sponsor of the tournament Visa, brought the trophy for a one-stop tour in Alex Plaza recently.
The tournament is set to start on 15 June until 13 July this year with Bafana Bafana being one of the contenders. It will take place in Egypt, which last hosted the tournament in 2006.
The communications director at Visa, Lesego Charlie, said Johannesburg was the only city selected for the special trophy’s visit with Alexandra selected as the stop for the tour.
“We brought the trophy here to Alexandra for community members to see the trophy live and take pictures with it. We know that not everybody will have a chance to go to Egypt and see this original trophy live,” Charlie said.
“This tour was exclusively meant for Alex and from here the trophy goes back to Cairo.”
Teresa Zwane (75) from Kew said she could not miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “I never thought I would ever have an opportunity to see a trophy live. I wish Bafana Bafana brings it home so that more people from other places will have a chance that we have as Alex community,” Zwane said.
