Local rugby giants on track to defend their title for the second time

ALEXANDRA – Mpengu said they will work hard to defend this year's Gauteng Senior Grand Challenge title that they have won in 2017 and 2018.

The head coach of the Alex Wolves Rugby Club U19 team Elias Mpengu said his team was taking one match at a time after their convincing win against Krugersdorp Harlequins Rugby Club.

This was after the Alexandra rugby team defeated its visitors 75–3 at KwaBhekilanga Sports Ground on 25 May in a match that saw the home side scoring 11 tries, with jersey number 10 Thabang Maake managing to convert 10.

The biggest winner of the match was Vivaldo Ovalimo, who scored four tries, embarrassing the visitors’ defence, to take Wolves to the top of the table with four wins out of the five they have played this season.

“The boys proved to our visitors today why they are champions of the Grand Challenge for the past two seasons. We will work hard to maintain this momentum and make history in this province,” Mpengu said.

Oockie Olivier, head coach of the Krugersdorp Harlequins Rugby Club, congratulated the Wolves and praised his boys for their performance after a hard week of exams.

“The boys played very well, though they were unable to match our opponents. They haven’t trained for the past whole week due to exams.”
